Glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV): Cutting, Weeding, Application & Care

Practical guide to glitter heat transfer vinyl (glitter HTV): choose a design, cut and weed it, apply it with suitable settings, and care for the finished garment.

Glitter heat transfer vinyl adds a sparkling finish to a T-shirt, sweatshirt, tote bag or other fabric accessory. It catches more light than standard smooth PU vinyl, but its texture calls for a little extra care when cutting, weeding and pressing.

This guide explains how to use Maison du Flex glitter heat transfer vinyl, which settings to use as a starting point, and which mistakes to avoid for a clean, bright finish.

What is glitter heat transfer vinyl?

Glitter HTV, also called glitter heat transfer vinyl, is a material for customising fabric. It is cut with a cutting machine and then applied to fabric with heat. Its sparkling surface adds visual texture to text, names, logos and decorative designs.

It can be used with popular cutting machines, including Cricut, Silhouette Cameo, LOKLiK, Brother ScanNCut and VEVOR. It works for one-off DIY projects as well as small production runs for a custom apparel business.

Glitter HTV or standard HTV: which should you choose?

The choice mainly depends on the look you want. Standard HTV works well for understated logos, fine text and designs that call for a smooth, subtle finish. Glitter HTV is a better fit when the design should stand out or become a focal point on the garment.

  • Standard HTV: a smooth, versatile finish.
  • Glitter HTV: a more visible sparkle and a more textured surface.
  • For a name or event design: glitter can make the design stand out right away.
  • For very small details: always run a test cut before cutting the final piece.

How to prepare a design for glitter HTV

A successful application starts before pressing. Prepare a clean cut file, avoid details that are unnecessarily tiny, and choose a design size that suits the item. For help with sizing, see our guide to choosing the right design size for a T-shirt, sweatshirt or tote bag.

As with most HTV supplied on a carrier sheet, mirror the design when the product instructions call for it. Check the orientation before cutting and run a small test cut: this lets you adjust the blade without wasting a large section of the roll.

Cut glitter HTV without damaging the carrier

The glitter texture may need a different cut setting from smooth PU HTV. The right setting depends on the machine, blade condition and design. There is no single setting that works for every setup: start with the closest material preset in your software, then confirm it with a test cut.

The blade should cut through the vinyl layer without deeply scoring the carrier sheet. If the design is difficult to weed, gradually increase the cut pressure or check the blade condition instead of immediately running another aggressive pass.

How to weed glitter HTV

After cutting, remove all the vinyl that should not transfer to the fabric. Good lighting and a weeding hook make the job much easier, especially around letters and the inner parts of a design.

Work slowly around small details and keep the carrier close to the area you are weeding. If a letter or part of the design starts to lift, put it back in place right away instead of pulling harder.

What temperature should you use for glitter HTV?

For the Maison du Flex glitter HTV product, the product page lists these general settings as a starting point:

Setting Suggested starting point
Temperature 150–160 °C
Press time 10–15 seconds
Pressure Medium to firm
Peel Follow the instructions for the specific product
Test Recommended before a production run

These values are a starting point. The fabric, heat press and actual heat distribution can affect the result. Always test first on a material you have not used before.

How to press glitter HTV: step by step

  1. Prepare the fabric. It should be clean, dry and placed on a flat surface.
  2. Pre-press the area briefly. This helps remove wrinkles and residual moisture.
  3. Position the design. Check its alignment and orientation before applying heat.
  4. Set up the press. Use settings suited to the specific HTV product and fabric.
  5. Press evenly. Consistent pressure across the whole design is especially important.
  6. Peel the carrier at the right time. Follow the peel instructions for the product.
  7. Check the edges. If an area lifts, protect the design and apply an appropriate additional press.

Can you apply glitter HTV with a household iron?

The Maison du Flex glitter HTV product page allows application with a heat press or a suitable household iron. An iron is less consistent than a heat press because temperature and pressure vary more from one area to another.

For a small project, use dry heat without steam and press one section at a time instead of sliding the iron back and forth like you would when ironing clothes. For a production run, a large design or a repeatable result, a heat press is more convenient.

See our detailed guide to applying HTV without a heat press.

7 mistakes to avoid with glitter HTV

  • Skipping a test cut: the texture may need a different setting from standard HTV.
  • Using a worn blade: it can create uneven edges and make weeding harder.
  • Choosing details that are too fine: intricate designs are more difficult to handle.
  • Pressing without preparing the fabric: wrinkles and moisture can affect transfer consistency.
  • Raising the temperature sharply at the first sign of trouble: also check pressure, press time and fabric.
  • Peeling the carrier without following the product's peel instructions: this can lift areas that have not fully adhered.
  • Washing too soon: ideally, wait 24 hours before the first wash.

Can you layer glitter HTV with other colours?

Multicolour designs are possible, but different products do not all respond the same way to layering. A glitter surface differs from smooth PU, so check that the materials are compatible before applying one layer directly over another.

When possible, design adjoining colour areas instead of adding unnecessary layers. This limits thickness and reduces the number of full presses. Our guide to layering multiple colours of HTV explains the method in more detail.

How to wash a garment decorated with glitter HTV

To help preserve the design, ideally wait 24 hours before the first wash. Then wash the garment at 30 °C, turned inside out, and avoid fabric softener. These steps reduce direct mechanical wear on the customised surface.

For complete care instructions, see our guide to caring for a garment decorated with HTV.

What can you make with glitter HTV?

Glitter HTV works especially well for highlighting a name, initial, short slogan or decorative detail. Common items include:

  • custom T-shirts;
  • sweatshirts and hoodies;
  • tote bags and pouches;
  • compatible sportswear;
  • birthday or event outfits;
  • wedding designs;
  • small runs for a brand or customisation studio.

Glitter can be used on its own or as an accent in a more understated design. Sometimes a small sparkling detail is enough to add contrast without making the garment look busy.

Glitter heat transfer vinyl FAQ

Is glitter HTV compatible with Cricut and Silhouette?

Yes. The Maison du Flex product can be used with Cricut, Silhouette Cameo, LOKLiK, Brother ScanNCut and VEVOR. Run a test cut to fine-tune the setting for your machine and blade.

What temperature should I use?

The product page lists a general range of 150–160 °C, with a 10–15 second press and medium to firm pressure. Always adapt these settings to the fabric and equipment you use.

Why are the edges of my glitter HTV lifting?

Check pressure, temperature, press time, fabric condition and whether the design was pressed evenly. If an area lifts after peeling, protect the design and apply an additional press suited to the product.

What temperature should I wash the garment at?

For this product, wash at 30 °C with the garment turned inside out and without fabric softener.
